Unstable Political Milieu
Animosity, brinkmanship and hostility are the dominant traits of Pakistan's politics. Merely, in the first ten years of its independence, seven prime ministers ascented to the thorne. The country had to lose its eastern wing because of the petty politics.
Even, after 75 years of its independence, history books cannot able to register a single name of the elected prime minister who has completed five year tenure in the office.
Masses believe that foreign powers and the establishment are solely responsible for the chaos. Due to their interference in the politics, puppets have been running the show and real representatives of Pakistan are at the bay.
But, to a greater extent, the assumption is wrong and a lame excuse. Rather, political parties, politicians and ordinary people themselves are responsible for the instability.
Let's discuss their roles one by one. When it comes to the part played by the populace, it does not respect democratic credentials during elections. People compromise national interests. Instead of caring about ideologies of contestants, a voter keeps his eye on their ethnicities and wealth. The practice fills the assemblies with the politicians of phantasmagorical views. In this way, the chances of a stable government fade away at the very first step.
Similarly, all major political parties of the country came into limelights due to overt and convert operations of non-democratic powers. Climax of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the western Pakistan during Yaya era to counter popularity of Awami League, evolution of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) on the scene during Zia reign to subdue PPP and unprecedented growth of Pakistan Tareek Insaf (PTI) with the help of the third umpire to press PPP-PMLN alliance are the prominent examples of the reality. Therefore, technically and historically, establishment of all these political parties was an imbalancing act rather than a balancing one - No matter, today, how much democratic these parties are-.
Even in current times, all these parties have not the kind of respect for the democratic values which they deserve. Opposition always remains ready to part of complicities against elected governments if the unseen forces give it assurance of good reward.
Internally, democratic culture is also absent. Stakeholders of the parties are hesitant to conduct free and fair intra-party elections. Top slots are booked for the members of few families. And, turncoats are always welcomed as second tier leadership if they become fruitful in establishment of a government.
Likewise, on one hand, the parties' stalwarts are the most vocal advocates of true democracy; on the other hand, they are not ready to decentralize power and lift ban on students' unions for the sake of nourishment of democratic culture. Consequently, roots of democracy are too weak to face the turmoil.
Space for dialogue and consensus on key issues is also minimal. Whoever comes to power tries to run the system only by his own whim and for his own welfare. He leaves no stone unturn to push the opposition to the wall. It makes the whole process of governance controversial.
Due to the above mentioned realities, national level political parties are alien in Pakistan. If a party has strong base in one or two provinces, it has not same respect in the other units. Resultantly, weak coalition governments are the defining feature of the politics.
In a nutshell, the political system itself is fragile and non-democratic. The loopholes provide opportunity to the spoilers to come and play their dirty games. If politicians want to ensure the stability, they have to become more resilient, democratic and prudent while making the choices. Otherwise, their follies and egos will always become a boon for the third parties.
