Syria and International Poliitics
In the Middle East, the rise of Hayat Tahrir Al Sham (HTS) has made Iran the biggest loser. It has not only lost its close ally but also faced a serious blow to Axis of Resistance.
As the new rulers of Syria have shown firm commitment to squeeze Iranian influence in the country, the Revolutionary Guards have to take a deep and risky route to feed their proxies in the region, especially in Lebanon and Palestine.
Then, Iran has to be more wary of security threats posed by the growing influence of Israel in Syria and the chances of direct conflagration have increased manifold.
On the other hand, the new development is a great strategic boost for Israel. Now, Knesset has more freedom to fulfill its ambition of greater Israel by pressing Axis of Resistance and grabbing more land beyond Golan Heights in Syria. The Zionists forces have already started to penetrate deep into Syria in the name of security.
Meanwhile, the people of Gaza are the other ones who will feel the heat of the oustation of Bashar al-Assad. When the threats to the sovereignty of Israel from Syrian side have subsided, the space for launching further offensive operations in Gaza has increased.
Likewise, the advent of HTS in the name of getting rid of the authoritarian regime can embolden people of the other countries of the Middle East living under autocratic setup. Revival of spirit of Arab Spring may provide a chance to Iran and its co’s of finding new friends through supporting favourable changes in the power corridors of countries like Bahrain.
Meanwhile, the dawn of HTS in Syrain politics can also become a sigh of hope for Al-Qaeda and Daesh. The past links of Abu Muhammad al Jullani with these organizations can activate their sleeper cells, like the resurgence of TTP in aftermath of Taliban era in Kabul.
Any such scenario will generate a new wave of terrorism, extremism and sectarianism which will haunt the whole world.
At the international level, the new reality has dented Russian interests while the west has turned victorious. Removal of the pro-Moscow regime has put the future of Russian naval bases in the west of Syria at stake and Russia has to find new footholds and routes to balance its power in Africa. It will also have long term effects on the Russia-Ukraine War.
Then, recognition of the new government of Syria will also test the sanity of the global leaders as HTS has status of a terrorist organization in official documents of many states. The question will also be a great dilemma for the Muslim world.
End of the decades old Assad rule in Syria is highly meaningful in the current arena of power politics. If it has added worries of Russia and Iran, the same is a boon for Israel and the west. The new power games will be morphed around the political situation in Syria and only time will unfold the further mysteries.
